This course focuses on the study of clinically significant bacteria and their role in human disease. Emphasis is placed on the laboratory identification, classification, and characterization of microorganisms using microscopy, culture techniques, biochemical testing, and molecular methods. Students will apply principles of microbial pathogenesis, specimen collection, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing to the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases. Correlation of laboratory findings with clinical significance is emphasized. Mycology and parasitology are introduced in a subsequent course.
