MLS 203: Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection Lab

This course provides instruction in the principles and procedures of phlebotomy and specimen collection used in clinical laboratory settings. Students will learn vascular anatomy, infection control practices, and patient identification to ensure safe and accurate specimen collection. Emphasis is placed on proper collection techniques, including straight-needle and butterfly venipuncture, capillary puncture, and preparation of blood smears. Additional topics include order of draw, special collection procedures, point-of-care testing, and age-specific considerations for neonatal and geriatric patients. Students will develop competency in specimen collection, handling, and processing while applying quality assurance and safety standards to minimize pre-analytical errors.
